SHAKTI Indigenous RISC-V Processor Programme
SHAKTI is an IIT Madras processor-development programme built on the open RISC-V instruction-set architecture. Led by Prof. V. Kamakoti and research teams associated with the institute’s computer-architecture work, SHAKTI has produced processor classes, development platforms and indigenous silicon demonstrations aimed at embedded and strategic applications. The programme is important because a processor is a foundational technology: domestic capability requires not only chip fabrication but also architecture, verification, software tooling and system integration. SHAKTI therefore represents long-term Indian intellectual property creation at the processor-design layer and provides a platform that researchers, startups and industry can build upon.
Problem Addressed
India relies heavily on imported processor intellectual property and silicon.
How It Works
Open RISC-V architecture is used to design indigenous processor cores and SoC platforms.
Key Differentiator / Impact
Builds domestic capability at the processor architecture and SoC-design level.
